How to Download an Entire Twitch Channel: Back Up Every VOD

Can you download an entire Twitch channel at once?
There is no official Twitch button to export a whole channel, and no single click that grabs every video at once. Twitch serves each video individually, so backing up a channel really means downloading each VOD one at a time and collecting them in a folder.
The good news: every public past broadcast, highlight, and clip has its own URL, and the free Twitch Downloader saves each one to a clean MP4. Work through the list video by video and you end up with a complete local backup of the channel.
This guide is for legitimate archiving: saving your own content, backing up public VODs, or fair-use purposes. Always respect the Twitch Terms of Service and copyright, and only download content you have the right to keep.

Find every VOD on the channel's Videos tab
Open the channel page at twitch.tv/<channelname> and click the Videos tab. This is where Twitch lists the streamer's saved content, grouped into Past Broadcasts, Highlights, and sometimes Uploads and Collections.
Use the filter dropdown to switch between these categories and the sort option to order by most recent or most viewed. Past Broadcasts are the raw stream recordings; Highlights are curated clips the streamer chose to keep past the VOD deletion window — off the retention clock, though Twitch has capped Highlights and uploads at a combined 100 hours per channel since 19 April 2025.
Important: regular Past Broadcasts are temporary. Twitch typically deletes them after 7 to 60 days depending on the account, so if you want a real backup, archive them sooner rather than later. Highlights and uploads stay until the streamer removes them.
Each past broadcast has its own VOD URL
Click any video in the Videos tab and look at the address bar. Every VOD opens at a URL like twitch.tv/videos/123456789, where the number is the unique video ID. That URL is the single piece of information the Twitch Downloader needs.
To build your archive list, open each VOD (or right-click and copy the link) and collect the URLs. For a channel with many broadcasts, paste them into a simple text file so you can work through them in order without losing your place.
Highlights and clips have their own links too. Clips live at clips.twitch.tv/<slug>, and the Twitch Downloader handles VODs, highlights, and clips the same way: paste the link, pick a quality, save the file.
A practical per-VOD workflow to back up the whole channel
Because it is one VOD at a time, the trick is a repeatable rhythm. Paste a VOD URL into the Twitch Downloader, choose your quality (Source/best for an exact archive, or a lower resolution to save space), and download. While that VOD muxes to MP4, queue up the next URL.
The Twitch Downloader saves each video as a standard MP4 (with a clean .ts fallback if ffmpeg is not installed), downloads segments in parallel for speed, and resumes any download that gets interrupted, so a dropped connection on a 6-hour stream will not force you to start over.
Name files consistently, for example by date and title, and keep them in one channel folder. After you have worked through the Videos tab, that folder is your complete channel backup.
Plan for storage before you start
Full-channel backups get large fast. A single hour of Source-quality 1080p60 stream can run several gigabytes, so a channel with dozens of long past broadcasts can easily reach hundreds of gigabytes or more.
Estimate before you commit: multiply the number of hours you want to keep by a rough per-hour size for your chosen quality. If space is tight, download at 720p instead of Source, or use the audio-only option for talk-heavy streams you only want to listen to.
Back up to a dedicated external drive rather than your system disk, and verify a few files play correctly before deleting anything from Twitch.
What the built-in channel browser actually returns
Type a bare channel name or a twitch.tv/<name> link and the tool asks Twitch for a live playback token for that channel before anything else. If the streamer is on air the token comes back and you land on the live stream, with the recorder ready — not a list of past broadcasts. The grid only renders when that live lookup fails, and the failure is caught silently, so you never see an error message; you simply get the browser instead. If you start archiving while the streamer is live, either wait until they go offline or work from individual twitch.tv/videos/123456789 links copied out of the Videos tab.
What the grid shows is past broadcasts only. The query behind it asks Twitch for videos of type ARCHIVE sorted by time, twenty-four at a time, so Highlights, Uploads and Collections never appear there even though the channel has them. Above the grid the tool prints one of two notes, depending on whether Twitch reports the account as Partner or Affiliate: "This channel is a Twitch Partner — past broadcasts are typically kept for up to 60 days." or "Not flagged as a Partner or Affiliate — past broadcasts may be removed in as little as 7 days (60 with Prime or Turbo, which Twitch does not expose here), so grab what you want soon." Clicking any card fills the URL box and analyses it straight away.
Load more fetches the next twenty-four using Twitch's cursor and removes itself when the cursor runs out, so the grid can eventually list every past broadcast the channel still has. That is usually a short list. Retention deletes broadcasts long before the grid gets long, which is why a whole-channel backup is in practice a backup of the last few weeks plus whatever the streamer promoted to Highlights — and Highlights are the part you still have to collect by hand.
Below the broadcasts sits a second grid headed "Popular clips (these don't expire)": twelve clips sorted by view count, with Today, This week, This month and All time buttons. There is no load-more for clips. Each period button runs a fresh query and replaces the grid with that period's top twelve, so the panel gives you a shortlist per period rather than a channel's full clip history. Complete clip coverage still means gathering slugs yourself from the Clips tab.
Two parsing quirks are worth knowing before you start pasting quickly. A bare entry made only of six or more digits is read as a video ID, not a channel name, so an all-numeric login has to be pasted as a full twitch.tv/<name> URL. And a bare word that is not a valid login is treated as a clip slug, so a typo comes back as "Clip not found or deleted" rather than as a channel error. An empty box answers "Enter a Twitch URL"; a link with no video, clip or channel in its path answers "Unrecognized Twitch URL"; and a login Twitch does not know answers "Channel not found, or it has no public VODs or clips." A channel that exists but has nothing public is different again: you get the browser with the note "No public VODs or clips found for this channel."
Use the expiry countdown to decide what to save first
Each of the first twenty-four cards can carry a small countdown badge. The tool takes the broadcast's publish date and measures it against a retention window of sixty days when Twitch reports the account as Partner or Affiliate, and seven days when it does not. With fourteen days or fewer left the card shows "~Nd left (est.)"; once the window has already elapsed the badge switches to "may already be close to expiring". Anything with more than fourteen days left gets no badge at all, so an unmarked card in the first page is not urgent yet.
Two honest limitations. The countdown is arithmetic on public metadata, not a deletion timestamp from Twitch, so allow a day of slack either way. And the badge math knows the seven, fourteen and sixty-day tiers, but Twitch does not expose Prime or Turbo status, so a Prime channel without Affiliate status is estimated at seven days when it actually keeps videos for sixty, so a Prime streamer without Affiliate status may keep broadcasts about a week longer than the badge implies. Being early costs you nothing; being late costs the video.
The badge also vanishes on paging. Cards added by Load more render without a countdown, because that follow-up query fetches only the videos and not the account's role flags. A missing badge on a paged-in card therefore means unknown, never safe — and since the list arrives newest first, those paged-in cards are the oldest broadcasts on the channel, the ones closest to deletion. The working order follows from that: page to the bottom, archive upward from the oldest broadcast, and leave clips and Highlights until last precisely because they are not on that clock — clips have no limit at all, and Highlights only count against the 100-hour Highlight-and-Upload budget Twitch introduced on 19 April 2025.
Sizing, format and browser choice for a long run
Before committing disk space, use the estimate the tool already shows. Next to the quality dropdown it prints a line like "≈ 4.2 GB" for the current selection, calculated as the playlist's bitrate divided by eight, times the selected duration. It appears for VODs only, and only when the master playlist reports a BANDWIDTH value — which is the same reason some quality labels carry a "· 6.0 Mbit/s" suffix and others do not. Because it is bitrate times duration, it follows both the quality you pick and any trim you set, so you can price Source against 720p on the same broadcast before starting.
Two size prompts can interrupt a run. Once the estimate passes about 1.5 GB in MP4 mode, the tool warns that converting buffers the file in memory and suggests Format → TS or a shorter section. In a browser without the File System Access API, an estimate above about 700 MB warns that the download will be buffered in memory. Both are confirm dialogs rather than caps — accept and the download proceeds — and they exist because the failure they predict is silent and wastes the whole download.
Browser choice matters more here than anywhere else. Chrome and Edge expose the File System Access API, so each file streams straight to disk and you are asked where to put it: one save dialog per video, which is mild friction when you are working through thirty of them, and dismissing that dialog cancels the download outright. Firefox and Safari have no such API, so the file is assembled in memory and handed over at the end. If the picker exists but fails for another reason, the log says "Could not stream to disk — buffering in memory" and the run continues in memory.
For a bulk archive in Chrome or Edge, TS is the safer default on long broadcasts. The MP4 path holds the remuxed output until the last segment and writes it in one go, while the TS path writes each segment as it arrives, so a six-hour source broadcast is far less likely to exhaust a tab as .ts. In Firefox or Safari the difference is smaller, since both paths end up holding the file in memory anyway. The tool states the trade-off itself when it finishes: "Plays in VLC; for MP4 choose Format → MP4." A .ts file remuxes to MP4 locally without re-encoding, so nothing is lost by deciding later. Clips ignore the switch entirely and always save as .mp4.
Plan around one more limitation: there is no resume, and for a VOD there is no Stop button either — the Stop control only appears while recording a live stream. Closing the tab or losing the connection means that video restarts from its first segment, so queue the long broadcasts for a time when you can leave the tab alone. Recording a live stream is a different path again: it never remuxes, always lands as .ts, and stops itself after three hours with a message saying you can start it again for another three.
When a video in the list refuses to download
Failures land at two moments: analysis and download. At analysis, "VOD unavailable (deleted, private or sub-only)" means Twitch returned no playback token for that ID. There is no login and no user token anywhere in the tool — it queries Twitch's public GraphQL endpoint with the public web Client-ID — so subscriber-only videos cannot be fetched even by someone who is subscribed. The same restriction can surface one step later as "Usher 403 (sub-only/expired)", while "Usher 404 (offline/not found)" means the video or stream is simply gone.
"No qualities available" means the master playlist loaded but contained no usable renditions. "Playlist HTTP <code>" means the media playlist for the selected quality failed to load. During a long archiving session both often mean the same thing: the signed playback token has aged out in a tab you left open for hours. Re-running the analysis on that URL mints a fresh token and usually clears it, and any 5xx code is worth a plain retry a minute later.
"Segment failed" is the mid-download version. Each segment is pulled in ranged chunks, and every chunk gets four attempts with a growing pause between them, so this message means all four failed on one chunk — typically a network drop, or a broadcast that expired while the run was in progress. There is no skip-and-continue: one failed chunk aborts that video, and you restart it. "GraphQL HTTP <code>" points at the metadata, chat or channel-list queries rather than at the media, and a failed clip-period query replaces the clip grid with "Could not reach Twitch — please try again in a moment."
The transmuxer has two messages of its own: "MP4 converter failed to start — choose Format → TS." if it never loads, and "MP4 conversion failed — choose Format → TS and retry." if it chokes on a segment. Both point at the same fix, which for a bulk run is the setting you probably want anyway. If one particular broadcast fails to convert while its neighbours succeed, take that one as .ts and remux it locally rather than spending the bandwidth twice.
Two things no downloader can fix are worth stating plainly. Twitch bakes copyright muting into what it serves, so a broadcast with muted sections downloads with those sections muted. And some streams require an authenticated token for anything above 720p60, so on those channels the top rendition simply will not be in the quality list — for any tool, not just this one.
Archive chat and chapters alongside the video
For VODs only, two extra buttons sit next to the download: chat, and — when the broadcast has chapter markers — chapters. Chat saves as a plain text file named <id>_chat.txt, one message per line as "[12:34] Name: message", where the timestamp is the offset into the broadcast and the hour appears only past the first hour. A counter updates as it pages through Twitch's comment API a hundred messages at a time; the loop stops after three thousand pages, an upper bound near 300,000 messages, well beyond any normal broadcast. An empty result returns "No chat available for this VOD".
Chapters save the same way, as <id>_chapters.txt, one line per marker with its timestamp and description — effectively a table of contents for the multi-hour file you just downloaded. Both buttons are hidden for clips and live streams, and the chapter button also stays hidden when the VOD carries no markers, so its absence tells you something about the video rather than signalling a fault.
Naming differs between the two, which matters once you are filing dozens of files. Video files default to streamer_date_title_quality, joined with underscores, with the characters Windows rejects replaced and the whole name capped at 120 characters, so a very long title gets truncated. The date is the ISO publish date, so a folder of defaults sorts chronologically without any effort. Chat and chapter files are named from the numeric video ID instead. Putting that ID into your own video filename, or renaming the text files to match, is what keeps a set together six months later.
The tool also keeps a short list of recent saves in your browser's local storage: the last eight filenames with their dates, per browser and per device. That is a convenience, not an inventory. On a channel with thirty broadcasts it will not tell you where you stopped, so keep the URL list you built earlier as the actual checklist and tick entries off there as each file lands.
